For four seasons, Lowe starred in the four time Emmy-winning drama The West Wing. He received two Golden Globes and an Emmy nomination for his role as Sam Seaborn. He starred in the holiday drama, The Christmas Shoes, the highest rated movie of the year for CBS, and starred with Sam Neill in FRAMED for TNT. Lowe recently completed his work as executive producer and star of NBC's legal thriller series, The Lyon's Den. Additional telefilm credits include Tennessee William's Suddenly Last Summer; Stephen King's miniseries The Stand; and Hallmark Hall of Fame's Thursday's Child, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Lowe has also written and directed American Untitled/Desert's Edge for Showtime.

Lowe made his feature film debut in Frances Ford Coppola's The Outsiders and has since starred in Class; The Hotel New Hampshire; Oxford Blues; Youngblood; St. Elmo's Fire; About Last Night; Square Dance, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination; Wayne's World; and Tommy Boy. Lowe has appeared in Mulholland Falls, with Nick Nolte; Contact, with Jodi Foster; and Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, with Mike Myers.

Lowe made his Broadway debut in A Little Hotel on the Side.
