Andie MacDowell
(Laura Phillips)
Actress Andie MacDowell began her career as a model, but transitioned to
the silver screen in 1984 when she appeared in Greystoke: The Legend of
Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. The next year she landed a supporting role in
the smash hit St. Elmo's Fire (1985), but MacDowell wasn't
considered a serious actress until after her pivotal role as Ann Millaney
in Steven Soderbergh's Sex, Lies and Videotape (1989). The actress
garnered a Golden Globe nomination for her effort.
In 1993 she coupled with comedian Bill Murray in the lighthearted film
Groundhog Day, but it was her role as Hugh Grant's love interest in
Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) that popularized the dark-haired
beauty. Professionally, MacDowell took a detour from romantic comedies when
she starred opposite John Turturro in Diane Keaton's Unstrung Heroes
(1995). This year the actress lent her dramatic talents to HBO's Dinner
With Friends, and she recently appeared in the sci-fi television
production of On the Edge (2001), directed and written by actress
and author Anne Heche.
