Born in Dorset, England, in May of 1960 and educated at the Central School
of Speech and Drama and the Ecole Nationale des Arts et Techniques de
Theatre in Paris, Scott Thomas made her film debut in 1986 opposite the
artist formerly known as Prince in Under the Cherry Moon. She then
appeared in a series of French films, ranging from television movies like
La Tricheuse to theatrical releases like Djamal et Juliette
and La Meridienne.
In 1988, she starred in Charles Sturridge's screen adaptation of Evelyn
Waugh's A Handful of Dust and won the Evening Standard Award as Best
Newcomer. That year she also appeared on television in the Hallmark Hall of
Fame presentation of Graham Greene's The Tenth Man, with Anthony
Hopkins. She followed that up with a variety of films in French and
English, including Force Majeur, Titmus Regained, Endless
Game, Aux Yeux du Monde, Body and Soul, Unforgettable
Summer and Ian McKellen's Richard III. Scott Thomas made a huge
impact in 1994's Four Weddings and a Funeral and Bitter Moon,
the latter directed by Roman Polanski. Her role in Four Weddings
earned her two of England's most important acting prizes, The Evening
Standard Award and BAFTA (British Film and Television Academy) Award. Her
performance in Angels and Insects, directed by Philip Haas, won her
another Evening Standard Award, this time as Best Actress. In 1997, Scott
Thomas was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar® for her role in The
English Patient.
