At its most basic level, Stir of Echoes (1999) is a simple,
absorbing ghost story. Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) is a working class man who
struggles to pay the bills for his growing family. His fate changes when he
allows his sister-in-law, Lisa (Illeana Douglas), to hypnotize him at a
late-night party. While he is deep in a trance, Lisa suggests he keep an
open mind, and her words open more than Witzky bargained for. The ghost of
a teenage girl (Jennifer Morrison) appears to him, and Tom is obsessed with
learning more about her and making a second contact with her ghost. His
obsession pushes his family to the limit as Tom loses his job and neglects
his pregnant wife, Maggie (Kathryne Erbe), and his son, Jake (Zachary David
Cope).
