In early 19th-century Mexico, masked swordsman Zorro (Anthony Hopkins) is a
champion of the people against the tyranny of Spanish rule, represented by
the ruthless Governor Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson). On the eve
Zorro's greatest triumph, the liberation of Mexico, Montero learns of
Zorro's secret identity as Don Diego de la Vega and attacks him in his home
leaving him imprisoned, his wife dead and his daughter to be claimed as the
child of Montero and raised as Elena Montero (Catherine Zeta-Jones).
Twenty
years pass, and Montero returns to California with a plan to bring it under
his total control. Upon learning of his return, Don Diego escapes from his
long imprisonment and prepares for his revenge. The older Zorro takes it
upon himself to train his successor, Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas),
who had once helped Zorro. Alejandro is cocky and oafish, but shows some
potential with sword play. Together, they must prepare to do battle with
Montero and his American henchman to save California and reunite with
Diego's lost daughter. Much swashbuckling and derring-do ensues, extending
the Zorro legacy from its early Hollywood era into the new century.
Co-produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment, with a cast featuring
supporting performances by Stuart Wilson, Matt Letscher and music by
Academy Award®-winning composer James Horner.
