Unlike many celebrities who leave old friends behind when they hit the big time, Adam Sandler continues to work closely with those who "knew him when." Screenwriter Tim Herlihy and director Frank Coraci are both college friends of Sandler's. Not only did these two work on The Wedding Singer, but Coraci also directed The Waterboy, while Herlihy penned other Sandler flicks like Big Daddy, Little Nicky and The Waterboy.

The Wedding Singer draws on a number of 1980's stereotypes, from Alexis Arquette's Boy George-esque character to Christine Taylor(a.k.a. Mrs. Ben Stiller)'s Material Girl. At least one '80s leftover made a special appearance in The Wedding Singer, and that dish is none other than Billy Idol. In a recent interview with VH1, the surprisingly resilient Idol recalled Sandler asking him to appear in The Wedding Singer. And Sandler told VH1 that, with his son in tow, Idol seemed less like an '80s rock icon than he did a doting father hanging around the set. That is, until Idol stepped into Sandler's trailer and showed him a few guitar tricks. The fifteen years between when The Wedding Singer takes place and when it was filmed weren't entirely kind to Billy Idol; as a result, Idol was heavily made up in his cameo. More than one critic referred to the "remarkably lifelike" Billy Idol.
