A dark, malevolent world is born when director Alex Proyas breathes life
into Dark City (1998). When John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell) regains
consciousness, he finds himself in a hotel room with a woman's bloody
corpse. He does not know where he is, what his name is or who the dead
woman is, so he flees the room. Just as he is leaving, strangers wearing
black attack him, and he is forced to fight for his life. As Murdoch tries
to orient himself, police searching for a serial killer stop him on the
street, but he is rescued from their questions by May (Jennifer Connelly),
a prostitute. Murdoch follows her to her apartment, but he soon flees.
He finds himself inexplicably drawn to a billboard depicting a serene
beach. As Murdoch reels from his disorientation, his wife, Emma (also
Jennifer Connelly), meets with Dr. Daniel Schreber (Kiefer Sutherland), a
psychologist, about her missing husband. She discovers her husband is a
prime suspect in a series of prostitute murders, and police inspector Frank
Bumstead (William Hurt) is trying to track him down. The chase is on as the
disoriented character tries to piece together the puzzle of his life before
the police capture him. Before he is destroyed himself, Murdoch races to
prove his innocence and unlock the mystery of a perpetually dark city where
memory is fluid and all inhabitants become unconscious at midnight.
