Shot on location in the District of Columbia and Harrisburg, Pa., The
Distinguished Gentleman is the brainchild of Disney executive Marty
Kaplan. Kaplan wrote the screenplay based on his firsthand knowledge of the
ins and outs of Washington D.C., drawing on his experiences as a speech
writer for former Vice President Walter Mondale. Much of the spirit of
The Distinguished Gentleman is reminiscent of Mr. Smith Goes to
Washington. Both films involve a Capra; the earlier film was directed
by the famous Frank Capra, while his grandson, Frank Capra III, worked on
the more recent film as first assistant director.
