According to writer Stephen Carpenter, he wrote Blue Streak after a
pitch to producer Toby Jaffe. The emphasis was on making the film a comedy
first and an action film second. To that end, Jaffe sought out a lead actor
who was first and foremost likeable and charming. Martin Lawrence fit the
bill, and Carpenter tailored the script to Lawrence's comic skills. The
contrasting elements of comedy and hard action are what brought director
Les Mayfield to the project. Mayfield realized that this genre demands a
great villain and found it in Peter Greene's portrayal of Deacon. Lastly,
Mayfield tried to create an atmosphere that kept the comedy fresh and
funny, by ensuring an environment that was fun to work in and allowing
stand-up comic Lawrence to attack his lines and role.
