Parents Guide (TV-14, etc.)

Are you currently using the TV ratings system implemented by the government?

Yes, we are rating our shows using the current ratings system, which includes quantifiable information about the adult-oriented contents of each show. For more details on rating guidelines, please visit http://thetvboss.org/.

Do you have any info about the ratings system available?

The TV ratings system breaks down as follows:
FOR CHILDREN'S PROGRAMMING:
  • TV-Y: All Children. Suitable for children as young as two years old.
  • TV-Y7: Older Children. Suitable for children age seven and older.
FOR ALL AUDIENCES:
  • TV-G: General Audience. Contains little or no violence, no strong language and little or no sexual dialogue or situations.
  • TV-PG: Parental Guidance Suggested. May contain some coarse language, limited violence and some suggestive sexual dialogue and situations.
  • TV-14: Parents Strongly Cautioned. May contain sophisticated themes, sexual content, strong language and more intense violence.
  • TV-MA: Mature Audience Only. May contain mature themes, profane language, graphic violence and explicit sexual content.
Each rating for a show or movie also includes a series of letters designed to tell parents exactly what objectionable material remains in the film:
  • L : Foul or Suggestive Language
  • D : Adult Dialogue
  • V : Graphic Violence
  • S : Sexual Content

I was watching a morning program with my kids when, right in the middle of CHiPs a commercial came on for an adult pay-per-view movie. How did this happen? Don't you have any guidelines as to what types of commercials you air during morning programming?

We give our airwaves over to our local cable/satellite affiliates for three minutes per hour, so that they can run commericals from which they, themselves, reap the benefits. The problem is that, unlike the commercials we run ourselves (which we have complete control over), the locally-run commercials (which differ in every market) are NOT under our control, and are instead under the eye of the ad sales manager at your local cable or satellite company. This is the person you should complain to.

We assure parents and children that TNT is concerned and quite attentive to the quality and types of ads placed within the daytime programming block. We even go so far as to have a separate sales department for the kids block, so that they can concentrate on the quality and suitability of the advertising aimed at children. And we apologize for any offensive commercials you or your family may have seen on TNT.

If your questions about TNT aren't answered in any of the above categories, we invite you to contact us at tnt@turner.com.
